Where to begin?

I know this is pretty heavy, but I have been in tears all morning over it. As I watched this, I couldn't help but imagine my kids lying in the dirt like that. The older sister reminded me so much of Abbie...the instinctive nurturer/caretaker. I just had to share...

I came across this video on this sweet blog. We see sad images like this all the time, and I know I'm guilty of feeling removed from it. I feel sad, I cry, I think what can be done for these poor kids? Then I go on with my life...using the excuse that I'm half a world away, or I'm so busy with my 4 young kids, blah, blah, blah. I am so grateful when God puts something like this in my path to remind me...

things don't matter
feeling overwhelmed or inadequate is no excuse for doing NOTHING
my life is blessed
where much is given, MUCH is required

I also came across this link, and thought I'd pass it along...

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this guy! It's so easy to do little things. There are so many people out there doing the BIG things...the hard part...I have NO excuse to not buy a pair of shoes, donate old clothes,
volunteer my time, make an online donation...and the list goes on. I LOVE people who give, and do it in a way that makes it easier for the rest of us to give as well.

So GIVE today...in some small way! Find a neighbor, a local organization, a charity website--the list really is endless. Then...leave me a comment letting me know what you've done--big or small. I know you don't like to toot your own horn, but it inspires me...and gives me ideas of how I can give.

AND...just for a little extra encouragement...I will randomly choose one lucky person from those who participate to receive a lovely handmade GIFT from me!

I'll leave you with my new favorite quote (from the TOMS shoes video)...

"the more you give, the more you live"

So there's your challenge! You have ONE week. Ready, set, go...

good things...

1. being reminded
2. new words to live by
3. knowing I can't do everything, but I can do something

Okay...I'll kick it off! I just bought a cute "be the change" hoodie at TOMS Shoes (you can even get 25% off by using the coupon code: luckybreaks10). See how easy that was! Now, a kid somewhere is going to get a free pair of shoes.

I sat watching the top video stream with Alyssa on my lap. She asked who those kids were and where they lived.
I explained a bit and we continued to watch...
she soon looked to me and asked

"Why did Heavenly Jesus send those kids down to Africa?"

I sat for a second, wondering myself to what end we are all born and why...

I then responded:

"So that we could help them."

I think I meant LEARN to help them.

Thankyou so much Sue for sharing this. I am excited to put my mind to use and find out more of what I can do.

Thanks Sue. I loved those clips. Have you seen the piece of art "worth of a soul" by Liz Lemon Swindle? It's beautiful. And when they were in Africa taking some pictures with a model posing as Jesus, apparently, tons of little children ran over because they really thought he was Jesus. I'm sure you can see that painting online.

Sue,

Here is a website I found that is a great way for crafty people to give.

http://www.knit-a-square.com/

It helps children in South Africa.

I am going to knit up some squares and send them in.

You amaze me!!

sue, i am grateful for your inspiration. i had grand thoughts of what i would do as the day started yesterday and as the day went on, i only did a few small things like give half my bench to a pregnant lady at abe's soccer practice...not much on the grand scale but at least it got me thinking.

Sue, I watched this last night, then again this morning with my boys. We were all so touched. Alex almost cried, too, as we watched. We talked a lot about being grateful for what we have, and being more aware of the needs of others. We will be having a family home evening on this topic to see what we as a family can do to help others. Thank you for the inspiration. You are one amazing woman.

I was happy to read this challenge because I've been wanting to do something to serve someone outside my family. A couple days before this post, I got a fortune from a fortune cookie that said, "Treat a friend to flowers." So that is what I did today. I bought a bouquet of flowers and instead of making just one persons day with lots of flowers, I gave one flower to lots of different people. It was a wonderful day today! Thanks for the challenge.

Sue I packed up 6 garbage bags full of clothing that we no longer need, and probablyhave not needed for quite a while now. I have them in a room- just waiting to decide exactly where I want them to go. NOT DI this time...I am challenging myself to think beyond this time. Not just the easy out.

Thanks again for the wonderful motivation.
